New to research? You can still start with us

You don’t need publications first. We look at what you’ve learned and tried, how you work with others, and whether you can make time for the year.

Who we’d like to work with

  • You can take part from late November 2026 until the final showcase in late November 2027
  • You can attend the main in-person gatherings in Seoul
  • You can learn on your own and take part in projects, presentations and team research
  • You keep the schedules and roles you agree on, and communicate with your team

Tell us about projects you’ve built, papers you’ve read, or things you’ve tried in class or on your own. What you contributed and learned matters most. If you haven’t chosen a field yet, tell us how you plan to explore.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply without research experience?

Yes. Research experience and publications are not required. Tell us how you’ve learned on your own, solved problems and worked with others. What matters is the time and will to take part steadily for a year.

Is everything online?

Learning and projects are mostly online, but the main gatherings are planned in person in Seoul, and you need to be able to attend them. Regular meetings and any extra in-person activities are arranged by each research team.

Can I choose my research team?

You can read each team’s introduction and choose several teams you’d like to join. Placement considers the late-February project review, your interests and each team’s capacity. Admission doesn’t mean a place on a particular team, and you may be placed on a team you didn’t choose.

What do I need to do to complete the program?

Complete the shared learning, mini-projects and capstone project, take part in the review and team placement, and receive your team lead’s approval. The program runs until the final showcase in November 2027.

Are all research costs covered?

Not all of them. Shared resources come first, and support is given within the operating budget and approval rules. Not every research expense, team dinner or external course fee is covered automatically. If you need to spend money, check with us first.

Is this a degree program? Is publication guaranteed?

No. OUTTA is a self-run research community, not a degree program. Teams aim to write and submit papers, but the schedule depends on each team’s progress and conference deadlines. Submission and acceptance are not guaranteed.
